Shepherds Rest (Westhill)

Situated around half a mile from the village across the busy A944, this pub was built in 2000 but has been extended since then. It has a large, rustic-style interior with plenty of nooks and crannies providing some privacy if preferred.

Ship Inn (Banff)

The interior of this historic nautical-themed inn featured in the film Local Hero. It has a wood-panelled bar and lounge with sea views through the small windows with a fine view across the mouth of the Deveron to Macduff. A blocked carriage arch hints at the earlier history of the building.

While it may always look closed, check for the small light in the window near the door or just do battle with the door latch to the public bar. First licensed in 1763, this well-worn howff offers a warming welcome with one handpull.

Slains Castle (Aberdeen)

Large, gothic conversion of a former church. Named after the ruins in the north east which is rumoured to have influenced Bram Stoker to write Dracula. The pub is on various levels and has a gothic feel to it. Still 3 pumps on the bar but only one beer available.

This pub was once the village blacksmiths. It is very much a feature of village life, offering pool, darts and occasional live music as well a single well presented ale.
